Welcome to the Office of the Medical Examiner

 

Mission

The Monroe County Medical Examiner exists to be of service to the citizens of Monroe County. The office is dedicated to the protection of the living, through comprehensive investigation of deaths, as required by law.

 

Duties

The Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office is authorized by Wisconsin State Statute 979.0 to investigate sudden or unexpected, violent, suspicious, or unnatural deaths to ensure the safety, health and welfare of the community. The office provides investigation, documentation, and medical evaluation of reportable cases.  The Medical Examiner's office works collaboratively with the local Law Enforcement Agencies, District Attorney Office and any other Crime Scene Investigator's responding to the scene, to bring trained medical evaluation to the investigation of deaths that are of concern to the public health, safety and welfare of the Monroe County Residents. The Medical Examiner's Office strives to provide an unbiased cause and manner of death. This is accomplished through careful examination and gathering of evidence at the death scene.

 

Office Hours

 Normal office hours are 7am to 3pm Monday-Friday.  The office may be closed for major holidays.  Calls are responded to throughout the day so at times the office may be unstaffed.  

Staff is on call 24 hours a day 365 days a year. 

To report a death contact Monroe County Dispatch Center at (608) 269-6333 and ask to have the on-call Medical Examiner paged.

Paperwork requests and inquiries should be done during normal business hours.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is a national network of local crisis centers that provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the United States. We're committed to improving crisis services and advancing suicide prevention by empowering individuals, advancing professional best practices, and building awareness.

The Lifeline and 988
988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. While some areas may be currently able to connect to the Lifeline by dialing 988, this dialing code will be available to everyone across the United States starting on July 16, 2022.
