Rolling Hills Community Forest/Natural Area
The Rolling Hills Community Forest/Natural Area was first planted in April of 2023. It is located at Rolling Hills, east of County Rd B & North of General Avenue. This area was previously cropped and served as the soil stock pile site during construction of the new nursing home. Roughly 1800 trees have been planted in this area with around a dozen species. The species were a mix of hardwoods, conifers, and shrubs.
Native grasses and flowers were planted around the trees to provide habitat for native pollinators, birds, and wildlife. The community forest will serve as an educational opportunity for the residents of Monroe County, provide a visual barrier between General Ave. and the new nursing home, provide habitat for wildlife, and improve water quality and numerous other co-benefits. The Land Conservation Department will continue to plant more trees each year with the hope of reforesting the land, increasing native habitats, and reducing erosion.
List of Species planted:
- River Birch
- Sugar Maple
- High Bush Cranberry
- Common Ninebark
- Black Cherry
- Hackberry
- American Hazelnut
- Bur Oak
- Red Oak
- White Spruce
- Red Pine
The trees were planted by hand and using a tractor and pull behind tree planting seat. They were planted in 9' rows spaced 6' apart. Members from Monroe County aided in this effort!
