Home MenuRoad-Stream Crossing Assessment
BACKGROUND
Monroe County Land Conservation Department started a Road-Stream Crossing Inventory and Assessment in 2021 with the help of Wisconsin DNR and funding from Trout Unlimited, Towns of Portland and Ridgeville, and the Monroe County Highway Department. The road-stream crossing inventory and assessment was continued through the summers of 2022 and 2023 with additional funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.
The purpose of the road-stream crossing inventory and assessment is to evaluate stream crossings for fish passage and flood resiliency using criteria from the Great Lakes Stream Crossing Inventory.
As of July 2023, approximately 540 road-stream crossing assessments have been completed throughout the entire county.

MEET THE INTERNS!
2023 Interns: David Ellefson and Dirk Lueck
David is a student at UW-La Crosse majoring in Biology with an emphasis on aquatic science. Part of his experience at UW-La Crosse has included assisting with researching aquatic invertebrates in the Mississippi River's side channels.
Dirk Lueck is from Berlin, WI, and is currently a student at UW-La Crosse majoring in Biology and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). He has worked with various professors and conservation organizations, such as the Mississippi Valley Conservancy and Friends of the Blufflands. His research projects included mapping of woody invasives, surveying invertebrates in the Mississippi, and developing models to identify dead trees and prairie remnants from aerial imagery.
2022 Interns: Helena Wehrs and Brandon Thill
Helena is an undergraduate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She just completed her third year and will be graduating fall of 2022 with a degree in Wildlife Ecology and a certificate in American Indian Studies. When she’s not busy studying, Helena plays on the university’s club rugby team and writes for the school newspaper, the Daily Cardinal. For the Monroe County Land Conservation Department, Helena works with our other intern, Brandon, to survey the stream crossings in the county. They are taking measurements and observations to determine the flood resiliency and fish passage these structures allow.
Brandon Thill grew up in Madison WI and earned his eagle scout at the age of 14. Through this process and time spent with my father and grandfather he learned to love and appreciate the outdoors and became an avid outdoorsman. Brandon earned his bachelor’s degree in Biology with a minor in Environmental Science at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and is pursuing a master’s degree in Aquatic Science, again at UWL.
